The ecosystem is rich. The question isn’t whether you should use AI. You should. The question is how to use it without fooling yourself into thinking you’re ready when you’re not.

What AI Is Actually Good At

I’ll be direct: AI tools are best when they accelerate your understanding, not when they replace it. Here’s where they genuinely shine.

Explaining concepts at any depth. This is probably the single best use case. If you’re fuzzy on how a Bloom filter works, or you can’t remember the difference between BFS and DFS traversal orders, or you need to understand CAP theorem deeply enough to discuss trade-offs in a system design round — AI will give you a clear, patient explanation. You can ask follow-ups. You can say “explain it differently.” You can request analogies, examples, edge cases. No textbook does this. No video does this. It’s like having an infinitely patient tutor who knows everything.

Generating practice problems. “Give me a medium-difficulty array problem that involves a sliding window” — and you get one. With test cases. With hints if you want them. With a full solution when you’re done. The ability to generate targeted practice on demand, calibrated to exactly the topic you’re working on, is a genuine superpower.

What AI Is NOT Good At

Here’s where people get burned. And I see it constantly.

AI cannot simulate real interview pressure. This is the big one. When you’re typing a prompt to ChatGPT, you’re in control. You can pause. Rethink. Delete your question and ask a different one. There’s no timer. No one’s watching. No awkward silence when you’re stuck. The entire stress response that makes interviews difficult is completely absent. AI doesn’t read your body language or tone. In a real interview, the way you communicate matters as much as what you say. Are you making eye contact? Do you sound confident or uncertain? Are you thinking out loud clearly or mumbling half-formed thoughts? AI has zero awareness of any of this.

AI won’t push back like a real interviewer. A good interviewer probes. “Why not use a trie here?” “What happens when this service goes down?” “Walk me through the failure modes.” AI can simulate this to some extent if you explicitly ask, but it doesn’t have the intuition to push on exactly the weak spots in your reasoning. Real interviewers do.

AI doesn’t capture social dynamics. The back-and-forth of a live interview — reading the interviewer’s reactions, adjusting your approach when you sense confusion, knowing when to ask for a hint vs. pushing forward — none of this exists in an AI conversation. And it’s a big part of what determines outcomes.

AI is too agreeable. This is subtle but important. If you propose a mediocre solution, most AI tools will say something like “That’s a reasonable approach! Concrete Workflows That Actually Work

Alright, enough theory. Here’s how I actually use AI tools in my own prep and what I recommend to others.

Workflow 1: Coding Practice Loop

  1. Ask AI to generate a problem at your target difficulty. Be specific: “Generate a medium graph problem involving shortest paths, similar to what Amazon asks in phone screens.”
  2. Solve it yourself. On paper or in a plain editor. No Copilot. No autocomplete. Timer on.
  3. When you’re done (or stuck), paste your solution and ask for review. “Here’s my solution. What’s wrong with it? What edge cases am I missing? What’s the time and space complexity?”
  4. Read the AI’s feedback, then implement fixes yourself. Don’t copy-paste the AI’s corrected version. That’s the difference between learning and consuming.

Use human mock interviews for the performance. The pressure. The communication. The real-time adaptation. The honest feedback about how you come across, not just what you say. Do this weekly, or at minimum four to six times before your interview window opens.

The ratio I recommend: for every hour of AI-assisted study, spend at least 20 minutes in a real mock scenario. Most people invert this — or skip the human element entirely. Don’t.

AI tools are the best training partners you’ve ever had for building knowledge. But they’re terrible sparring partners for building performance under pressure. You need both.
